Fin AI Tutor ("Fin," "we," "us," or "our"), operated by BTF Intelligence LLC, is a browser extension that provides AI-powered, step-by-step tutoring help for K-12 students. This Privacy Policy explains what information Fin collects, how it's used, who it's shared with, and the choices you have. By installing or using Fin, you agree to the practices described here.
This policy is written to accurately describe how Fin currently works. If you're a parent or guardian reviewing this on behalf of a student, the "Children's Privacy" section below is especially relevant to you.
When you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, display name, and a unique Google account identifier. We use this to create and identify your Fin account — we never receive your Google password.
When you take a snapshot of a problem, type a question, or use Essay Help, that content (including the image, for snapshots, and the full text of an essay, for Essay Help) is sent to Anthropic's Claude API to generate a tutoring response or essay feedback. We do not store the text of your questions, essays, or your snapshot images on our servers — they're used only to generate that one response.
Your active conversation with Fin is saved locally in your browser (using your browser's extension storage), not on our servers, so it's still there if you close and reopen the popup. It clears itself automatically after 12 hours of inactivity, and you can clear it at any time from the chat screen or from Settings.
To power streaks, badges, and a simple summary of what a student has been studying, we log a short subject and topic label for each tutoring session (for example, "Math — Quadratic Equations"). This is deliberately limited to that structured label — we do not log or store the full text of questions, snapshots, or Fin's responses.
We track how much of your plan's allowance you've used in the current period — credits (snapshots and typed questions), mock exams, graded essays, Learn a Language units, and the per-unit language quiz attempts and practice-chat turns — to enforce the limits of your plan (Free, Basic, Pro, or Ultimate). On the Free plan, the mock exam, graded essay, Learn a Language unit and Play & Learn trial are one-time rather than weekly, so those counts are kept for the life of the account rather than reset each week. We also keep streak and lifetime activity counters used for the badges feature.
Settings like your grade level, whether "In-depth Responses" is on, your website focus-blocker list, and display preferences are stored locally in your browser. Grade level is also sent along with your tutoring requests (not stored on our servers) so Fin can adjust its wording — it isn't saved to our database.
Some study data also stays only on your device and never reaches our servers: your Learn a Language progress and quiz scores, your Play & Learn game scores, and a cached copy of any language lesson you've opened so that reopening it doesn't cost another unit. Clearing your browser's extension storage, or uninstalling Fin, removes all of it.
If you subscribe to any paid plan (Basic, Pro, or Ultimate), add the optional Smarter AI add-on, or purchase a credit top-up pack, payment is handled entirely by Stripe, our payment processor. We never receive or store your full card number — we only store your Stripe customer ID, your subscription status, the status of the Smarter AI add-on (which is a separate subscription with its own renewal date), and the billing metadata needed to manage your account.
Automatic renewal. Paid plans and the Smarter AI add-on renew automatically each billing period until you cancel, at the price shown when you subscribed. We do not currently send a reminder email before each renewal, so your renewal date is shown in Settings and in Stripe's billing portal at any time. You can cancel either one from Settings in the same number of steps it took to subscribe, and cancelling never removes access you've already paid for — see "Your Choices" below.
| Service | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in request | Authenticating your account | |
| Google Cloud / Firebase | Your account record, usage counts and study-topic labels | Hosting our database and server code — this is where the data described above is stored |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Your questions, snapshots, and essay submissions | Generating tutoring responses and essay feedback |
| Stripe | Billing details you provide at checkout | Processing payments and subscriptions |
Fin is an AI product. Tutoring responses, exam questions, essay feedback and language lessons are generated by a large language model (Claude, from Anthropic), not written by a person, and they can occasionally be wrong — Fin is a study aid, not a substitute for a teacher. Your questions, snapshots and essays are sent to Anthropic solely to generate that one response.
We do not sell your personal information, we do not use it for advertising, we do not share it with data brokers, and we do not use your content to train AI models. These four companies are the only third parties that receive any of your data; we use no advertising SDKs, analytics trackers or data brokers in Fin.
Account and usage data is retained while your account is active. Study-topic labels are kept as a rolling window of the 50 most recent entries — older ones are deleted automatically as new ones arrive. We never store the text of your questions, your essays, or your snapshot images at all, so there is nothing of that kind to delete or request a copy of. Chat history is local to your device, expires automatically after 12 hours, and can be cleared anytime. You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings' "Delete My Account" button — this immediately cancels any active subscription and removes your billing record from Stripe as part of the same action. You can also email us at brandonai.tutor.k12@gmail.com if you'd rather we process the deletion for you.
One limited exception, for abuse prevention. When you delete your account, we keep a single small record for about 10 days containing: a one-way cryptographic hash of your Google account identifier, how much of each active allowance had already been used and which period each of those counts belongs to, the date of the deletion, and a count of how many times that same account has been deleted. We keep this because plan limits reset weekly, and without it someone could use up a week's free allowance, delete their account, sign back in, and get a fresh allowance immediately — repeating indefinitely at our cost. If the same Google account signs up again during that same week, the remaining allowance picks up where it left off instead of resetting.
This record contains no email address, name, raw account identifier, or any content you submitted — only a hash that cannot be reversed to identify you, plus period labels, a few usage counts, a deletion date and a deletion count. Weekly allowances stop being affected once that week ends, so returning in a later week gives you a fresh weekly allowance. The Free plan's one-time trials (a mock exam, a graded essay, a Learn a Language unit and Play & Learn) are the exception: because those are once-per-account rather than weekly, they are also restored if you sign back in while this record still exists. The whole record is automatically discarded after about 10 days, after which nothing carries over at all.
Fin is designed to help K-12 students, which may include children under 13. We do not knowingly collect more personal information from a child than is described in this policy, and we do not use children's information for advertising. Signing in requires a Google Account; children under 13 generally need a supervised account (such as Google Family Link) per Google's own account policies, and that supervision is the mechanism by which a parent approves the account Fin signs in with. Fin collects only what is described in Section 1, uses it only to run the service, never conditions a child's use of Fin on giving more information than the service needs, and never shows behavioural advertising to anyone.
If you are a parent or guardian, you may at any time ask us to show you what information we hold about your child, correct it, or delete it — and you may refuse to allow us to keep collecting it, by deleting the account from Settings or by asking us to. Write to us at the address or email in "Contact Us" below, and we will respond within 30 days. We verify these requests by replying to the email address on the account. We encourage parents and guardians to be involved in a young student's use of Fin, review this policy, and contact us at brandonai.tutor.k12@gmail.com with any questions or to review, correct, or delete their child's information.
Wherever you live, you can ask us to do the following, and we will not charge you or treat you differently for asking:
Email brandonai.tutor.k12@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days. We verify requests by replying to the email address on the account.
If you are in California. We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising — we have never done either, so there is no "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" mechanism to offer. You have the rights listed above under the CCPA/CPRA, and the right not to be discriminated against for using them.
If you are in the EU, EEA, or UK. Our lawful basis for handling your information is the performance of our contract with you (running the tutoring service you signed up for) and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and preventing abuse. You have the rights listed above under the GDPR and UK GDPR, and you have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Where your data is handled. BTF Intelligence LLC operates from the United States, and our service providers (Google Cloud, Anthropic and Stripe) process data on servers in the United States. If you use Fin from outside the US, your information is transferred there.
We use industry-standard practices to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) for all requests and access controls that prevent direct client access to our database — all data access goes through our own server-side code. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information appropriately.
If we discover a security breach that has exposed your personal information, we will investigate immediately, take steps to stop and contain it, and notify you by email at the address on your account without undue delay — and in any case within 72 hours of becoming aware of it, unless law enforcement asks us to delay in order to protect an investigation. We will tell you what happened, what information was involved, what we are doing about it, and what you can do to protect yourself. We will also notify regulators where the law requires it.
Fin requests broad website access so its on-page features (the floating "Ask Fin" shortcut and the optional website focus blocker) can appear on any page you visit. The content script that provides these features does not read, collect, or transmit the content of the pages you visit — the focus blocker only checks the current tab's domain, locally in your browser, against a list you configure yourself.
Fin is operated from the State of Texas, United States. This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the State of Texas and the applicable federal laws of the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Nothing here takes away any right you have under the law of the country or state you live in that cannot be waived by agreement — if your local law gives you stronger protection, that protection still applies.
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of Fin after a change means you accept the updated policy.
Questions about this policy or your data — or a request to see, correct or delete it — can go to either of these. We respond within 30 days.
